T8 - 6.2B John Doyle, Matt Gordon, Sean Atwood (Declaration of Independence) CONGRESS VOTES YES FOR THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE Philadelphia, July 3, 1776 In the past few weeks, Congress assigned a Committee of Five to draw up a formal Declaration of Independence. They were to tell the world why the Thirteen Colonies are separating from Britain. Congress has been meeting secretly in the Philadelphia Statehouse so as to avoid being caught in a meeting. Congress hopes the new Declaration will bring the unlawful and unjust doings of King George III to an end. Congress assigned a committee of five on June 11th, to create a document that explains the reason the Thirteen Colonies are separating from Britain. The Committee consisted of John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. While Jefferson wrote the majority of the Declaration, the committee helped edit and revise the document. The Committee members worked together in order to create a document that included all perspectives of the colonists. By June 28th, the Final Draft was completed. And on July 2nd, the Committee presented the Final Draft to Congress. . The Declaration of Independence is a formal document created by members of the First Continental Congress. Also, a least of grievances, reasons for independence, are stated for anyone asking why. These grievences give examples of King George III errors as a monarch and laws passed by Parliament that most citizens disagree with. The majority of American colonists are hopeful that King George III agrees to American Independence but there are many that have their doubts. . On the topic of this Declaration of Independence, there are mixed feelings. Those loyal to Britian strongly dislike the idea of separation from their homeland. They want any talk of rebellion to be vanquished! Patriots, however, feel that this is exactly what is needed. In recent history there have been many new laws passed by Parliament that the Patriots feel are restricting their rights. Some of these men have right to believe so. For any merchants in Boston, buisness is decreasing for the recent Intolerable Acts have shut down the Boston Harbor! This has many citizens saying enough is enough! Meanwhile, the British sense war and have a right to. That may be the next step to a new and free America! The patriots have now been preparing for war against Great Britain. The British have been have been speaking about waging war against the thirteen colonies. But we don’t know if King George III is going to accept the declaration of independence or not. This document could separate the thirteen colonies from Britain into our own country and we could live under our own rule and law. The patriots are getting tired of Britain controlling our exports and taking our money and are now doing something about it.
